What’s the medium then of the fax machine?
What’s the medium of the personal computer?
“Faxes are neither good nor bad.” Well, OK good-
bye. That person is sound asleep. Hasn’t got a
hope of ever getting close to what the medium is
doing. And this is just the gross effects in the
culture at large. It doesn’t even touch on the
personal effects, the effects that these media
have on changing your sensibilities, and the way
you think or feel or see, or acknowledge situations,
or the way you live in the world. Because every one
of them extends, and perverts, distorts the senses
of the user. The corollary to “the medium is the
message” is, “the user is the content.” The user of
